Myrtle Smalley

January 23, 1915 — November 13, 2007

Waynesville-Myrtle E. Smalley, age 92, died on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Haywood Lodge. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Alexander and Callie Mae Pruett Calhoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Smalley; four sisters, Minnie Nuckolls, Kate Lowe, Ruth Stanelli, and Dorothy Turner; and three brothers, Paul, Joe, and Sam Calhoun. She retired as Director of Social Services for the State of NC for over 21 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville and was very involved in community activities. She was gifted in crafts, such as painting and needlework. She is survived by a sister, Billie Turner and one brother, Don Calhoun and his wife, Jo Ann, of Waynesville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2007 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Waynesville Find Us Faithful Fund, P.O. Box 690, Waynesville, NC 28786.
