Nancy Kennedy Clark

Nancy Kennedy Clark, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and wife, departed this world on January 28, 2025, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born on July 19, 1946, in High Point, NC, to loving parents Colon and Kathleen Kennedy. Nancy (or Nana as we all knew her) lived a life filled with love and laughter.

Nancy dedicated 25 years of her career to Gaston County Schools, igniting young minds and attempting to help every child know their worth and find their potential. She began her teaching journey at Carr Elementary before continuing at Costner School. Her profound affection for her students was apparent to all who knew her as she hoped that she imparted not only book smarts but also life lessons.

Her love for children and teaching, lead her to a bachelor in science degree in early education from Appalachian Teaching College in 1968. That same year she wed her college sweetheart and the love of her life, Michael “Gene” Clark from Shelby. They loved each other through each season of life. Together, they not only shared a passion for teaching but also enjoyed antique collecting and dealing, a hobby that brought them closer and allowed them to share their appreciation for history and its treasures.

As a devoted mother, she raised two daughters, Kristin Clark Westmoreland (Chris) and Jennifer Ashley Clark, for whom she instilled values of love, determination and compassion. Nana’s legacy continues through her greatest joy, which is her three grandchildren, Andrew Kennedy, Abigail Caroline, and Cameron Michael Westmoreland. Her storytelling determined “Setback” playing, and “singing” will remain in their hearts forever. Nana enjoyed growing flowers and spending time with family and friends at both Garden City Beach and the Western NC Mountains which she loved to post and share with all her Facebook friends.

Having a passion for creative writing and receiving awards for her short stories helped capture the depth of her experiences and emotions. She also took pleasure in a beloved collection of vintage dolls. In restoring these dolls to their former glory, she was reminded of glimpses of her childhood filled with innocence and wonder. Throughout her life, she was a Girl Scout, a member of the Junior Woman’s League and she remained a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. All of this knit together a community of lifelong friends that spanned place and time.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, two devoted daughters, a faithful and loving sister Suzie Hauser (Pat), her cherished grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will carry her spirit in their hearts.

Nancy felt so blessed to be Suzie’s sister and the daughter of “Red” and Kat, who instilled their values of dedication and faithfulness in their two daughters.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Long's Chapel Methodist Church on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Room.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  A gathering of friends will also be held from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at the Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Gastonia, NC.

The care of Ms. Clark has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville
