Canton-Nannie Hargrove Smathers, age 86 of the Bethel Community died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late James Burton and Maggie Shook Evans Hargrove. She was the wife of the late Howard H. "Tommy" Smathers who died in 1994 and was also preceded in death by one daughter, Nancye Smathers Haire; a sister, Jimmie Hargrove Jones; a half-brother, Roy Evans and half-sister, Lois Kinsland. She was a very active member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church and also Piney Grove Cemetery and was past president of the PTA at Bethel School. She and her husband were former owners of Smathers Oil Company.
She is survived by two sisters, Ellen Woody of Canton and Mildred Holbrook and her husband Bob of Enka, 3 grandchildren; Phillip, Scott and Tate Haire and 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2003 at Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend Naomi King officiating. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall following the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of Bill Holbrook, 3401 Old River Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Friday. Serving as pallbearers will be Rego Jones, Carroll Jones, Johnny Woody, Jim, Bill and Tommy Holbrook, Carroll Kinsland and Phillip Haire.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, C/O Johnny Woody, 542 Reed Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
