Nelda Metzger

Waynesville—Nelda Jean Metzger, age 88, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015, at Haywood Lodge. Nelda was a native of Industry, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Herb Morton and Nelda Poppenhager Dean. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Thomas Metzger, who died in 2003. As a young woman, Jean engendered a fondness for world travel. With Daniel working his way up the ranks in the United States Navy, Jean accompanied him from China to California. Along with travel, Jean enjoyed collecting art and antiques. Her true passion involved collecting rare and unique buttons. Jean's collection consisted of over 500, 000 buttons, each labeled and given a description. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by a son, Stephen Metzger and his wife, Janet, of Waynesville; a grandson, Daniel Metzger, of Waynesville; and sister, Betty Carraway and her husband, Bert, of Charlotte.
