Norman Donahue

April 26, 1925 — March 7, 2006

Waynesville-Norman F. Donahue, 80, of Waynesville, died on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at Autumn Care Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1925 to Samuel and Mabel Donahue. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Pacific Theater and European Theater Ribbons. He retired after more than thirty years as an agent for Western and Southern Life Insurance Company in Hollywood, Florida. After he retired, he moved to Walker in the Hills in Waynesville. He had a lifelong love for music and was active in the national barbershop organization, SPEBSQSA in Florida and North Carolina and sang with The Miamians and The Land of the Sky Chorus in Asheville. He was one of the founders of the Winchester Creek Country Club serving as its first president in 1983 - 1984. He was active in Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains in Waynesville where he served on the parish vestry, both as Senior Warden and Junior Warden. He served as a delegate to the convention of the Diocese of Western North Carolina. He was a member of the Adult Choir as well as the Men's Club. He is survived in death by his wife of forty years, Margaret S. Donahue of Waynesville; a son, David James Donahue of Hollywood, Florida; a daughter, Linda M. Cope of Hollywood, Florida; a sister, Ruth Boles of Independence, Missouri; a grandson, Gregory R. Libero of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; a granddaughter, Susan P. Perko of Boca Raton, Florida; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Perko. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William E. Donahue and Philip A. Donahue. A requiem will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. with the Reverend Dr. Howard W. White, Jr. as Celebrant. Donna Buckner and Blake Rogers will serve as Licensed Chalice Bearers. Ushers will be David Goad, Al Hammar and Peter Zinglersen. The committal will follow immediately after the service in the Grace Church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Haywood County, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or to the Grace Church Food Pantry, 394 N. Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
