Norman James Stamey, age 87, of Cat Haven Road, died on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Hospice of Rutherford County in Forest City. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Frank James and Lucy Shipman Stamey. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Burress Stamey and a sister, Lucille Robinson. He retired from Champion International with 35 years of service. He was a deacon at Rescue Baptist Church. Norman was a gifted woodworker. He constructed a pulpit, numerous chairs, lamps, and tables. He was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Elizabeth Stamey; a son, Carl James Stamey and his wife, Karen, of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter, Norma Sue DeWeese and her husband, Gary, of Ellenboro, NC; three stepsons, Bill Burress and his wife, Linda, of Enka, Ray Davis and his wife, Jamie, of Canton, and Richard Davis and his wife, Karen, of Matthews, NC; a stepdaughter, Vicki Morris and her husband, Joe, of Concord, NC; a sister, Frankie Robinson of Canton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Darrell Webb and Reverend Jesse Hollingsworth officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
