Canton - Norman William "Bill" Thompson died on June 23, 2018 at Silver Bluff Village. He was born on October 5, 1930 and a lifelong resident of the Dix Creek Community. His parents were Elizabeth (Lizzie) Franklin and Norman George Thompson. In addition to his parents; his wives, Billie Blaylock Thompson and the love of his life for 57 years, Betty Pardue Thompson; his daughter, Jane Brackett; and son-in-law, Arnold Brackett; his son, Gregory Thompson; and his brothers, Otis, Curtis and Jerry Thompson predeceased him.
Bill was a retired carpenter and well known as a talented master woodworker. He has built many churches, homes, cabinets, fine furniture as well as clocks, cutting boards and lazy susans. Bill was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer, deacon, and Sunday School Director. Bill was devoted to his family and friends as shown by his many acts of kindness over the years.
Bill is survived by many friends and family including his son, Ron Thompson (Mark) of Durham and his grandchildren; Tad and Tomi Thompson (Angie), and Toni and Tiffany Brackett Rich (Chris) and great grandchildren, Nute, and Shelby Thompson and Eli Rich. He is also survived by his aunt, Louella Pressley; his sisters, Majetta Thompson Wells of Rogersville, Alabama, Bobbie Thompson Singleton and brother, Douglas Delroy Thompson; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Blaylock, Bonnie Thompson, and Cheryl Sanford all of Haywood County. Also Martha Whitley and Tonya Sherrill were very special in the lives of both Bill and Betty over the years.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Dix Creek Road at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service and the service will continue at the gravesite in the church's cemetery. Rev. Dr. Jack Holland will lead the service.
Memorials may be left to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 261 Dix Creek Road, Canton, NC 28716. The family would also like to express its appreciation to the staff of Pigeon Valley and Silver Bluff Village for their care of Bill for the past 5 weeks.
