Canton - Odie Lee "O. L." Smathers, Jr., age 77, formerly of Canton died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at his residence in Tignall, GA. He was a native of Haywood County where he lived most of his life until he retired and moved to Tignall. He was the son of Odie Lee Smathers, Sr. and Alma Smathers. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elia Mae Folsom and Louisa Barrett; two brothers, Edwin and Earl Smathers and a niece Jill Smathers Emerson. He was a self-employed building contractor the majority of his adult life and a member of Mallorysville Baptist Church in Tignall. O. L. was an avid hunter and a proud member of the National Rifle Association. His greatest enjoyment, however, was spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his wife of 17 years, Doris Parton Smathers, he is survived by two daughters, Laura Ann Evans of Canton and Phillis Crawford of Waynesville; three sons, Tom Noland and Donny Noland both of Clyde and Randy Noland of Alabama; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Smathers of Candler and Josephine Smathers of Canton; five grandsons; two granddaughters; six nephews and a niece. Graveside services will be at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Morning Star United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Donnie Berry and Reverend Roy Cates officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 - 3:45 p.m. prior to the services at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Vista Care Hospice, 767 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.
