Ora "Orey" Edward Burnette, age 88, of the Cruso Community died Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of James Henry and Phebe Watts Burnett. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters, Clayton, Millard, Etta Faye, Ethel, Nina, Ruby, Ivalee, Ira, Brownlow and Hobert. He was a graduate of Bethel High School and a self-employed farmer. He was a founding member of Victory Freewill Baptist Church. He was Past Master of the Sonoma Lodge #472 AF&AM. He just celebrated his 50th anniversary as a Master Mason. Ora was an avid outdoorsmen who had a genuine love for hunting, fishing and growing things, especially apples. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant serving in World War II and Korea. He is survived by two sons, Dave Burnette and his wife, Cathi of Cruso and Dennis Burnette and his wife, Lynn of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Lillian Rice of Clyde; a brother, Jasper Burnette and his wife, Wilma of Cruso; four grandchildren, Holly, Seth, Kendra and Alisa Burnette; a great grandson, Jade and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with the Reverend Bob Littrell and Reverend Stacy Hightower officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Masons will meet 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. At the family's request flowers are appreciated and memorials may be made to Oxford Masonic Orphanage, Oxford, NC 27565.
