Oscar Layman, Jr.

Canton - Oscar Layman, Jr., age 76, died Thursday, May 31, 2007 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of the late Oscar and Ollie Grooms Layman. He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Layman who died in 2006; two brothers, Charles and Hollis Layman and one sister, Alma Fore. Oscar was a 1948 graduate of Bethel High School and worked for Champion International with 37 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, an avid fisherman and gardener and a true family man. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ivey Layman; two sons, Robert Alan and Ricky Carroll Layman both of Bethel; three grandchildren, Robby, Michaela and Ryan Layman and two great-granddaughters, Rachael and Shelbie Layman. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Bethel Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements. At other times, the family will be at the home.
