Waynesville, Patricia Ann Browning Day, age 62, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Autumn Care. Born on February 28, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Denton and Virginia Bailey Browning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Laurence Wescott, III. Pat was a 1964 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and earned an associate degree from Massey Jr. College in 1966. She was an instructor in Law Enforcement for the Haywood County Sheriff's Department and certified in Basic Law Enforcement Taskforce by Blue Ridge Technical College. Pat was the first woman deputy sheriff in Haywood County and later worked as a detective in the department. In 1988 she was named Woman of the Year for Haywood County and served as Regional Chairperson and Information Exchange in 1989 and 1990. In 1994 she returned to the Haywood County Sheriff's Department to head up the Child Abuse Task Force where she served until her retirement in 1996. Subsequent to her retirement, Pat served on the board of directors for the Haywood County Department of Social Services. She is survived by her beloved husband, John R. Day and would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on September 24. She is also survived by one daughter, Brandolyn Mills; her grandson, John Mills; two brothers, Vernon Browning and his wife, Sherry, of Shelby, NC and James Browning and his wife, Lee, of Arlington, TX; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. A service celebrating Pat's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church on Ratcliffe Road with Reverend Dr. James Mackey officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 12:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. An honor guard will be provided by the Haywood County Sheriff's Department. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
