Patricia Smathers

Waynesville, Patricia Ann Hipps Smathers, age 81, of Blink Bonny Drive, passed away on Sunday, April 05, 2015 at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center. A native of Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Willis Carlyle and Mattie Sue Allen Hipps and was also preceded in death by her husband, Garrett A. Smathers, who died in 2011. Patricia was a 1951 graduate of Canton High School and attended Leadership in Nursing Practice at UNC Chapel Hill, Kenyan-American Medical/Surgical Clinical Study at the University of New Mexico, Head Nurse Management Course at MAHEC and a variety of subjects offered by Haywood County Hospital. From 1985–1989, she was Head Nurse of the Cardiac Step-Down Unit at Haywood County Hospital and from 1989 until her retirement, she was a visiting nurse for Home Health in Asheville. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and Canton Presbyterian Church. Patricia enjoyed attending shows at the Flat Rock Playhouse and was a huge fan of vintage movies, especially those starring Gregory Peck. She will be forever remembered as a supreme caregiver, wonderful wife, caring mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Eric Smathers of North Myrtle Beach and Mark Smathers of Waynesville; two sisters, Nancy Garett of Greensboro and Paula Cole of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Ashley Marie Smathers and Dylan Eric Smathers of Canton; and one great-grandson, Landon Smathers. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2015 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend David Nash officiating.
