Clyde, Paul Davis Best, age 95, of the Upper Crabtree Community, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at Autumn Care. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William Pinkney and Eva Rogers Best and was the last of fourteen siblings. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sammie McCracken Best, who passed away in 2001; nine brothers, Ralph, Joseph, Crawford, George, Luther, Jack, Roger, Donald and Bob; and four sisters, Mary Best, Nora B. McCracken, Ruth B. Davis, and Ethel B. Walker. Paul worked hard all his life to support his family. He spent 44 years at the American Enka Corporation and Brand Rex. He was a part time farmer while employed and upon his retirement, became a full time farmer. Although Paul�s eyesight was diminished because of macular degeneration, he was always willing to lend a helping hand on whatever chore needed to be done. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He is survived by a loving daughter, Jean McClure and her husband, Bob; a loving son, Dean Best and his wife, Nancy, and another son, Henry Best, of Clyde; four grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charlie Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Stuart McClure, Tim Bell, Ralph McCracken, Joe and Jack Walker, Ben Best, Neil Justice, and Bobby Leming. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery Fund, c/o Ben Best, 537 Bald Creek Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
