Paul Eugene Bumgardner, age 83, died Friday, September 01, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Haywood County since 1925. He was the son of the late Hershel and Bessie Dillard Bumgardner, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ford Bumgardner, who died in 2002. He retired from Champion International with 45 years of service as a superintendent in shipping and storage. Paul was a member of Canton First United Methodist Church. He was a World War II United States Air Force veteran serving in Japan. He is survived by a son, Max Bumgardner and his wife, Debbie, of Clyde; three grandsons, Greg Bumgardner of Charlotte and his fiancé, Kelly Hanson of Athens, GA, Eric Bumgardner of Hamilton, OH, and Blair Bumgardner of Asheville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend David Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his son, Max Bumgardner, 519 Nellie John Drive, Clyde.
