Paul Downey, Jr.

Waynesville, Paul Lester Downey, Jr., age 85, of Downey Drive, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at his residence. A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he had resided in Haywood County since 1993. He was the son of the late Paul Lester Downey, Sr. and Beulah Margaretta Arnold Downey. Paulwas a US Air Force captain and pilot, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and later managed a Radio Shack Store. Paul loved spending time with his family and friends and also enjoyed reading, working in his yard, and cars. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and was on the Administrative Board. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy A. Downey; a daughter, Lisa A. Carraro and her husband, Leo, of Greenville, South Carolina; son, Todd A Downey of Webster, Texas; one granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Downey; loving caregivers, Angie Furgason, Meredith Cooke, Joy Smith, Kiana Medlin, Melissa Massie and Jennifer Mease. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Sanford L. Giles and Reverend Richard Harbstreit officiating. Burial will be at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday prior to services.
