Paul George, aged 85, of Haywood County, passed away on January 3, 2025, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born on July 18, 1939, he was a beloved educator, entrepreneur, and community member whose contributions leave a lasting impact.
Paul dedicated a significant part of his life to education, teaching history, wrestling, and football at Tuscola. His commitment to instilling knowledge and fostering a love for learning in his students was a hallmark of his career. In addition to his teaching profession, Paul owned and operated Waynesville Insurance Company, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. He also engaged in real estate, further demonstrating a multifaceted approach to his professional life.
A graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, Paul furthered his education with a master's degree in education from UNC Chapel Hill. This educational background equipped him with the skills necessary to inspire others and make a meaningful impact on his community.
Paul's interests extended beyond the classroom. He loved to hunt, fish, and explore the outdoors, showing a profound appreciation for nature. His passion for adventure was complemented by his love for world traveling and music, particularly bluegrass, which connected him to the rich cultural heritage of his community. Paul was also a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where he found fellowship and spirituality.
He is survived by his one son, Casey Hubbard; one sister, Antonia Gonatos; and two nieces, Olympia Lopez (Alex) and Ashley Papazahariou (Herc). His family legacy continues through his great-nieces and nephews, Mikla and Alexander Lopez and Georganna and Zach Papazahariou.
Paul is preceded in death by his father, Chrest A. George; his mother, Cecelia George; and his brother, Bill George.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broyhill Baptist Children's Home, 111 Sneed Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
