Waynesville-Pearl Hayes, age 83, of 498 Love Lane, died Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Julius Caesar Hayes and Hattie Floyd Hayes. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Hayes and three sisters, Floyd Helen Hall, Lina Padgett Bryson, and Ethel Hayes McDarris. She was a graduate of Sylva High School and attended college and graduated from the Asheville Normal School. Following two years as an elementary school teacher, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Corps. Following her discharge, she then joined the American Red Cross serving in the Korean Conflict and two tours of duty in Vietnam. She was also formerly a social worker with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She co-owned the Mountain Manor Rest Home of Waynesville with her sister, Ethel Hayes McDarris and later built Skyland Care Center in Sylva. She later owned and operated the Hayes House Cafeteria, which later became Haywood Care Center, and is now operated by the Brian Center in Waynesville. She also built and was former owner of Midway Motel and Truck Stop. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Cemetery in Whittier. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday prior to the services at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
