Winston-Salem formerly of Canton – Pearl McCracken Swanger, age 96, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Pearl was born to Minnie Furr and Ector McCracken in the Upper Crabtree community of Haywood County, September 16, 1918 and made her home in Canton until moving to Winston-Salem in 2005, due to declining health. She graduated from Clyde High School in 1936 where she was an excellent student and captain of the girls' varsity basketball team. Pearl was a homemaker and a volunteer at Haywood County Medical Center. Until her health declined, she was an active member of Canton Free Will Baptist Church. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Roy Lee Swanger; four sisters; and seven brothers. Pearl is survived by a son, Charles William Greene, Sr. (Jean), of Winston-Salem; a daughter Frances Greene Carter (Danny), Augusta, Montana; six grandchildren, including a special granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kristen and Tim van den Meiracker; many special great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends; and special friends, Helen and Paul Hamlett and Mary Norton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
