Waynesville, Peggy Frazier Smathers, age 74, of Leatherwood Road, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Wade and Blanche Lovedahl Frazier. Peggy was also preceded in death by her 1st husband, Don Hooper in 1962 and her 2nd husband, Sammy Joe Smathers in 1995. She graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1955 and retired from Haywood Regional Medical Center in 2008 with 44 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed going to the beach and was an avid sports fan for UNC, Tuscola and Pisgah. Peggy loved being with her family. She is survived by one daughter, Donna Parton and her husband Jimmy of Waynesville; a step-son, Randy Pope and his wife Ann of Cruso; sister, Loretta DeWeese and her husband Ronnie of Waynesville; three grandchildren; Joshua and Jordan Parton and Anna Carroll Pope and mother-in-law, Bertha Hooper of Cruso. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Reverend Charles Dean, Reverend Randy Pope and Reverend Billy Ferguson will officiate. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be David and Will Trantham, Trent Smathers, Patrick Parton, Danny Stiles and Tom Alexander. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at Loretta DeWeese's residence, 167 Royal Crest Heights, Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuscola High School Athletic Fund, 564 Tuscola School Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to Pisgah High School Athletic Fund, 1 Black Bear Drive, Canton, NC 28716.
