Percy Smith

February 26, 1919 — December 3, 2010

Waynesville, "Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psalm 119:11 "For by Grace are ye saved…" Ephesians 2:8 Percy McCall Smith, our father, was a devoted student of Scripture. We can never remember a time that he did not spend reading, pondering, and sharing God's Word with all that he met. His life- long thoughts were about the incredible wonder of God's Grace bestowed upon His Creation. He loved the lord, his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Harsh Smith, his three daughters, Warren McCune, Jan Burkhead, Libby Walton, his son, David McCall Smith, his eight grandchildren, and his seven great grandchildren. Born February 26, 1919 in Birmingham, Alabama, he graduated in engineering from Auburn University, served in the Corps of Engineers during World War II, and then spent most of his career with Dow Chemical. In the mid 1960's, he and Elizabeth came to a farm in western North Carolina that they loved dearly and established a Craft Shop they ran with their son David. When they sold the farm they moved into Waynesville and remodeled an old home on Boyd Avenue. Throughout most of his adult life, "Pete" was an avid football fan, particularly of college ball. On December 3, he went home to his Lord. His wife, Elizabeth, remembers him as a loving and devoted husband. As his children, we will remember his pirate stories (he would fall asleep while we begged for more), his trips to the ice cream parlor, his forts at the beach that he dug for us, his attempts to interest us in daily exercises, and his love of "teasing" when we took ourselves too seriously. On December 8th, at his request, his funeral services were held with his family attending. Memorials may be made to Covenant Theological Seminary (www.covenantseminary.edu) or Leader Dog for the Blind, Inc. (www.leaderdog.org)
