Waynesville-Philip Paul Blevins, age 78, of 61 Fairway Hills Drive, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 05, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Reverend E. P. and Ella Dale Blevins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Luther and Wiley Blevins, and his sisters, Helen Wright and Kansas McMahan Winfrey. His is survived by his wife of 56 years, Montez Peterson Blevins; his son, Kevin A. Blevins and his wife, Carolyn, of Robbinsville; his daughters, Siri Hoover, and her husband, Frank, of Robbinsville, Tara M. Blevins of Waynesville, and Deah Branson, and husband, Joseph, of Canton; one brother, E.P. Belvins, Jr., of Waynesville; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; seven nephews; and seven nieces. Philip Blevins resided in Haywood County for 43 years. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. As an outdoorsman, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Among many hobbies, he enjoyed collecting and restoring vintage and antique automobiles the most. He was a charter member of the Mountaineer Antique Auto Club. He also was a former member of the Kiwannis Club of Maggie Valley as well as a former Chief of the Maggie Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Due to his talented way with all things mechanical he was the maintenance supervisor for several amusement parks in Western North Carolina and South Carolina. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and served in World War II as a member of a naval aviation ranger team. Following the war, he accompanied Admiral Byrd on his expedition to Antarctica in 1946. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2006 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend William McNeill officiating. Military services will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The family will continue to receive guests at the Blevins residence following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Long's Chapel United Methodist Church Bell Tower Fund, Post Office Box 459, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.
