Philip Mcdowell

Waynesville, Philip Falter McDowell, age 69, of Leatherwood Road, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2011 at his residence. A native of Chicago Illinois, he had resided in Haywood County since 1963. He was the son of the late Samuel Alexander McDowell Jr. and Patricia Virginia Kunkel McDowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela McDowell, who died in 1986. He was owner of McDowell Office Products. A member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville, he served as a deacon, Sunday-school teacher and director, outreach director and many church related committees. Philip founded the Haywood County Church League for basketball and softball and coached little and youth league ball. Philip served on the Waynesville Park and Recreational Board and enjoyed classical music, all kinds of sports, hiking and the outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pauline "Polly" Gibson McDowell; a son, Patrick McDowell and his wife, Sherri, of Waynesville; two brothers, Russell McDowell and his wife, Ann, of Albany, New York and Richard McDowell and his wife, Susan, of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Sydney and Mia McDowell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville Sanctuary with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend John Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom and Kevin Massie, Max Gardner, Jr., Tom Roberts, Larry Ammons, Ron Muse, Paul Rathbone, Bill Teague, Jim Otwell and John Burress. Honorary pallbearers will be the men's Sunday school class. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Youth Media Library established in memory of Pam McDowell, P.O Box 690 Waynesville, NC 28786; MedWest-Haywood Homestead Hospice Center, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721; or the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
