Waynesville, Phyllis Smathers Roper, age 75, of Tate Street, died Friday April 25, 2008 at her residence after a period of declining health. She was a native of Haywood County, having lived in Atlanta for 35 years and was the daughter of the late William Rufus and Inez Derrick Smathers. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Carene Lewis, Mildred Medford and Bessie Wood; three brothers, Rufus Eugene Smathers, William Kenneth Smathers and Willis "Bud" Smathers. Phyllis was employed by Southern Bell Corporation as a supervisor for 38 years and was an active member of the Pioneers, through her work at Southern Bell. She is survived by four sisters, Patricia "Pat" Nix, and her husband, Bill of Canton; Dorothy Clark, Marjorie Stamey and Judy Smathers, all of Waynesville; one brother, Gordon Smathers of Waynesville and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Reverend G.W. Jameson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
