Phyllis Shahan, 92, passed away in the early morning hours of December 21, 2021, after a few years of declining health.
Phyllis Fizer was born in Barboursville, West Virginia and attended Salem College, where she met Sanford, her husband of 71+ years. They moved to Florida in 1960, and there they raised their three daughters. In 2006 they relocated to their favorite place, the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Phyllis enjoyed many hobbies, including music (piano and keyboard), sewing, gardening, back yard bird watching, crafts and reading. Her attention to decorating was evidenced by her frequently complimented home. She enjoyed hosting both friends and family for a great meal, where no one left hungry! Many friends told her she was a great listener, and they enjoyed talking with her.
She was delighted to be around all her grandchildren as they grew up, and her home was a gathering place for all. More recently she loved visits from her great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was a member of Clyde United Methodist Church, and was active in years past, as her health allowed.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Sanford (Sha); daughters, Cheryl Cromer (Thom), Joy Gray, Kim Britts (Keith); five grandchildren, Shannon Garcia (Wil), Erin Graham (David), Stephanie Rodman (Jim), Chad Britts (Shannon), and Thomas Cromer; nine great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Landen, Caitlin, Caleb, Hailey, Ryleigh, Jackson, Henry and Leo; sister, Patti Erwin; and several nieces and nephews.
We are grateful for the long and nurturing life of Phyllis and will be holding a celebration of her life in the future.
The care of Mrs. Shahan has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
