Clyde, Phyllis Marie Caldwell Whitman, passed away on Monday, July 14 at her residence. Born in Haywood County on June 27, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Leon L. Caldwell and Mazie McCracken Caldwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Davis Whitman, who died in 1999; sisters, Mary Seay and Janice Killian; and brothers, Raymond and Jack Caldwell. She graduated from Clyde High School and the old Mission Hospital School of Nursing. Phyllis was in the Nurse's Cadet Corp during World War II and worked as a registered nurse at Haywood County Hospital until her retirement. She was a founding member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Waynesville and an inactive member of the Hugh Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. After retirement, Phyllis enjoyed genealogy research, crocheting and embroidery. She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Whitman, two precious grandchildren, Paul Taylor and Caroline Alexandra Maxfield, and her first great-grandchild due in November. She is also survived by a sister, Doris Lindsey, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Waynesville with Reverend Larry Jones officiating. Entombment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 166 Pigeon Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
