Verlin Lee "Pork" Willis, age 75, of Willis Road died on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at his home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Lee and Lucy Mauney Willis. He retired from Champion International in 1998 with 43 years of service. He was a member of North Canton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Pork had 38 years of service with the North Canton Fire Department having served as chief for 15 of those years. He was a United States Marine veteran serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Surrett Willis; a son, Barry Willis of Candler; three daughters, Carol Sorrells and her husband, David, of Canton, Susan Moore and her husband, Bill, of Candler, and Brenda Williams and her husband, Mark "Opie", of Clyde; three sisters, Polly Denherder of Eureka, CA, Bertha "Toot" Brown of Noblesville, IN, and Peggy Carson of Leicester; a brother, Ernest "Bub" Willis of Canton; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at North Canton Baptist Church with the Reverend Mark Caldwell and Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. At other times, the family will be at the home. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity or flowers are appreciated.
