Waynesville, Ralph Robert Mathis, age 92, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Autumn Care.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert Leroy and Sarah Lanning Mathis. He was also preceded in death by five sisters, Ruby Parker, Edna Ledford, Roena Smith, LulaBelle Swanger, and Lucy Gaddis and one brother, Clarence Mathis. Ralph was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in Italy with Company B, 349th Infantry Regiment. He later retired from the NCDOT. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed working in his garden. He was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 67 years, Pauline Wyatt Mathis; a daughter, Kaye Daley (Bill) of Tucker, Georgia; a son, Ronnie Mathis (Rhonda) of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Heather Cook (Bronson), Ronald Mathis, and Dixie Daley; two great-grandchildren, Jaci and Kenzie Cook; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Scotty Patrick officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Ronald Mathis, Bronson Cook, Jeff Wyatt, Mike Rich, Bruce Bowman and Yates Cloninger. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. prior to services.
