Ransom Russell

Dellwood-Ransom Moody "Buddy" Russell, age 78, of Russell Cove Road, passed away peacefully of pancreatic cancer on Monday, February 20, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Joseph Dewey and Laura Moody Russell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, of 53 years, Gladys Frady Russell who died in 1998 and two sons, William Moody Russell who died in 1948 and Milas Scott "Bo" Russell, who died in 1971; and a great granddaughter, Emmaleigha Brown, who died in 2000. He was a life-long farmer and he loved horses, dogs, and coon hunting. And the light of his life was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He retired from Dayco Corporation in 1988 with 36 years service. He was a member of Dellwood Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Nina Messer, and her husband, Everett, of Dellwood; two sons, John Robert Russell and his wife, Louise, of Canton and Buddy Ray Russell and his wife, Sharon, of Easley, SC; three sisters, Margaret Louise Fugate and Bobbette Parton, both of Dellwood, and Joan Evans of Asheville; six grandchildren, Michael, Laura, and Lindsey Russell, Lisa Warren, Jeffrey Messer, and Marcia Brown; and six great grandchildren, Tiffany, Daniel, and Hunter Russell, Nicholas Messer, and Jena and Calli Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2006 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jason Ledford and Reverend Wayne Carson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home, and at other times, at the residence. Serving as pallbearers will be Don and Terry Sheehan, Jimmy Shuford, Linwood Parton, Jim and Joe Fugate, Daniel Messer, and Buddy Cochran. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Fugate, John Jones, Troy Franklin, J.C. Parris and Joe Townsend.
