"1927 – 2014" Clyde – Raymond Brierly, age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2014. A native of Montclair, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Roy Leonard and Mildred Hughes Brierly. Ray was a radio operator in the United States Coast Guard-Merchant Marine from which he was honorably discharged. He was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. When not at sea during merchant service, Ray was a New York City taxi driver and a Greyhound bus driver. He also owned a Peterbilt truck business. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Zelda Ponder Brierly; three step-sons, David (Tricia) Ponder, Marshall (Leslie) Ponder, and Scott (Anita) Ponder; two sisters-in-law, Pat Edwards and Llewellyn (Bud) Ostergard; two brothers-in-law, Geoffrey (Sandra) Cooper, and Steve (Freda) Cooper; 11 step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; numerous cousins and a special friend and caregiver, Betty Galvin. A celebration of Ray's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Daniel Gaddy and Reverend James Hart officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. There will be a reception for all guests following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Clyde, NC 28721.
