Waynesville-Raymond Bernard Caldwell, age 89, died Friday, January 28, 2005 in the Baptist Hospital at Winston-Salem, NC. A native of Catalooche in Haywood County, he was the son of Marion Hubert "Hub" Caldwell and Maude Lee Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mehaffey Caldwell, who died in 1986 and a daughter, Martha Jane Caldwell Smith; a grandson, Stephen K. Caldwell; 3 brothers, Orville "W. O.", Hubert, and Henry Caldwell; and two sisters, Lois Isley and Beulah Elder. He was a wire coater and retired from Dayco after 50 years service. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Dufort, and her husband, Victor, of Winston-Salem; a son, Kenneth Ray Caldwell, of Concord, NC; a sister, Burr Fincher and her husband, Milton "Frosty", of Candler; a brother, Gilmer Caldwell and his wife, Dot, of Canton; six grandchildren, Nathan Smith, Melanie Smith Ferguson and her husband, Dennis; Zeb, Matt, and Tori Dufort; and Stephen Caldwell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2005 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with Reverend Dr. Charles H. Mercer officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday prior to the service, and at other time, at the home of Melanie Smith Ferguson, 130 Browning Branch Road, Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Victor Dufort, Dean and Nathan Smith, Harvey Lance, and Donnie and Jerry McCall.
