Raymond Schaefer

June 22, 1927 — January 17, 2005

Clyde-Raymond W. Schaefer, age 77, of 61 Glenwood Drive, died Monday, January 17, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, he had formerly resided in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin before moving to Haywood County 18 years ago. He was the son of the late Christian and Elizabeth Bosner Schaefer. He was a semi-pro football player and also played softball and golf. He also enjoyed painting landscapes in oil. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II as a gunners mate on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific and later served in the US Army as an MP. He was a member of the VFW. He is survived by his wife of 50 1/2 years, Vivian Warner Schaefer; three sons, Thomas R. Schaefer and his wife, Renate, of Harvest, AL, John R. Schaefer and his wife, Lita, of Orlando, FL, and James D. Schaefer, of Pinehook, VA; three sisters, Emma Thompson, Selma Lindeman, and Edna Dalhaimer of Sheboygan, WI; four grandchildren, Sheila, Kimberly, Raymond, and Vanessa; and two great grandchildren, Marcus and Elijah. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005 at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Dennis McGowen officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20 at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to the St. John's Catholic Church Building Fund, 234 Church Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
