Canton- Raymond M. Williams, age 62, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Haywood County Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a native of Haywood County, he is the son of Geraldine Williams, of Canton, NC and the late Spurgeon Williams. Raymond was a Vietnam veteran, having served eight years in the U.S. Air Force and then serving six years in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea. Raymond was a 1966 graduate of Bethel High School and later graduated from Costal Carolina with a degree in Math. He taught school in Aynor, South Carolina and later ran his own business teaching college prep courses in Conway, South Carolina. He worked at Harrahs in Cherokee prior to his illness. Raymond was an avid classic car buff and enjoyed playing golf. He really appreciated the closeness and support of his "Bethel '66" group of friends and alumni. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Gail Heathman and her husband, Paul, of Waynesville, NC,; and one brother, Steve Williams and his wife, Pam, of Maggie Valley, N.C., and six nephews. Friends are welcome to a celebration of Raymond's life and remembrance from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 88 Hidden Valley Circle, Canton, NC In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
