Lake Junaluska-Reverend Dr. John Holmes Christy, Jr., age 76, of Kilgore Drive, died Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was born and raised in Andrews, NC by his parents, John Holmes Christy, Sr. and Mary Willie Fisher Christy. He received his Bachelor's degree in English and religion from Duke University in 1951 and from Duke Divinity School in 1954. He was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity from Pfeiffer University in 1983. He was a beloved minister and served appointments across the Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1953 until the present. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan Crowder Christy of Lake Junaluska; one daughter, Karen Christy Kurtz and her husband, Michael and their children, Josh and Anna, of Concord; three sons, Mark Christy and his wife, LuAnn, and their children, Megan and Taylor of Reidsville, Paul Christy, and his wife, Jamye, and their children, Zack and Caroline of Sylva, and David Christy and his wife, Pam, and their children, Luke and Maggie of Concord; an aunt, Jean Christy, of Andrews; a brother, Robert Christy and his wife, Peggy, of Weaverville; three nephews, Bob Christy and his wife, Shannon, of Asheville, Bill Christy and his wife, Deidra, of Black Mountain and Richard Christy of Asheville; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration of Reverend Christy's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2005 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with clergy of United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Christian Growth Center at the church. A family committal service will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. at Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, NC. There will also be an additional celebration of Reverend Christy's life at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at First United Methodist Church of Andrews following the committal.
