Waynesville-Rev. James Hollins Lipsey, M. D., orthopaedic surgeon, Anglican priest, U. S. Navy veteran, husband, father, grandfather, and novelist, passed away in his Waynesville, N. C. home on Monday, October 16, 2006. He was 74. Dr. Lipsey was the beloved husband for 39 years of Patricia Linn Lipsey; loving father of Marjorie Linn (Stephan) Benzkofer, James H. (Stephanie) Lipsey III, and Katherine Toy Lipsey; proud grandfather of Samuel Benzkofer and Wynston and Zakary Lipsey. He also is survived by his sisters, Mary Champion of Jackson, Miss. and Grace Clayton of Roswell, N. M. He was preceded in death by his father, James Hollins Lipsey, M.D., his mother, Marjorie Gammack Lipsey, and his sister, Adele McDaniel. His kindness, passion, and intellect will be dearly missed. Dr. Lipsey was born on November 2, 1931 in Memphis, Tenn. and grew up in Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi and received his medical degree from Northwestern University in Illinois. He served in the U. S. Navy as a medical officer from 1957 - 59. He worked with Project Hope from 1963 - 64 and Volunteer Physicians for Vietnam from 1966 - 67 to treat civilian war casualties. Dr. Lipsey was in private practice for 37 years in Asheville, N. C., Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Waynesville, N. C. He married Patricia (nee Linn) in 1967. He retired in 2001. He was ordained as an Anglican priest and founded St. Peter's Anglican Church in Waynesville, N. C. in 1994. Dr. Lipsey published the novel "After the Manner of My Youth" in 2005. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Maggie Valley with Father Marshall of St. Peter's Anglican Church and the Right Reverend Louis Campese officiating. Burial will follow at Lewis Cemetery in Asheville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
