Buddy Joe Champion, a beloved Methodist minister known for his faith and love for his family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2024, in Clyde, North Carolina.
Born April 24, 1939, to Gomelia Jackson and Raleigh Champion, Buddy grew up in Shelby, North Carolina alongside his brothers Kenneth and Mickey.
Buddy's journey in education began at Limestone University and led him to Duke University, where he received a degree in Theology. His academic achievements took him to Drew University where he received his doctorate in Religion/Theology. He then became a Methodist minister and faithfully served for 42 years.
Throughout his career, Buddy cherished his congregations, finding joy in the growth and well-being of those he served. Beyond his ministry, he also enjoyed his beloved beach house and Duke Blue Devils.
Above all, Buddy cherished his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn Champion. He is survived by his sons Stan and Blake, daughter-in-law Barbie, grandchildren Justin, Brittney (Ethan) and Jaylon, and great grandchild Emma.
Buddy Champion will be remembered for his kindness, faith, and his profound impact on everyone fortunate enough to have known him. His absence will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and the communities he served.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
The care of Mr. Champion has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
