Reverend Broyles, Jr.

October 10, 1926 — September 4, 2004

Canton - Rev. John Finley "Jay" Broyles, Jr., age 77, of 205 Newfound Street died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of the Leicester Community of Buncombe County and the son of the late John Finley Broyles, Sr. and Bessie Roberson Broyles. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Mark and Morris Broyles and a grandson, Christopher Alan Broyles. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II and was retired from Champion International with 43 years of service and also from the United Methodist Church where he served the Fines Creek Charge for 25 years from 1966 - 1991, he was a member of Plains United Methodist Church. He was a former member and director of the Tarheel Mineral Society, a member of the Champion Old Timers, serving as past president from 1971 - 1972 and a member of Snug Harbor. He also served as a member of the Search Committee for North Canton Elementary School property and was a former member of Canton Athletic Committee. He was a Mason and a member of Pigeon River Lodge #386 AF&AM. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Ernestine Rhymer Broyles of Canton, he is survived by three sons, Alan J. Broyles and his wife, Debi of Rock Hill, SC, Steven Joseph Broyles and his wife, Katherine of Lakeland, FL and Robert J. Broyles and his wife, Anne of Raleigh; a sister Grace B. Long of Candler as well as ten grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 6, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Reverend Kelley Jones and the Reverend Neil Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28716, or Gideon International, East Haywood Camp, Box 1204, Canton, NC 28716 or to one's favorite charity.
