Reverend Phillips, Jr.

August 24, 1921 — March 25, 2009

Rev. J. Carlisle Phillips, Jr., of Chapel Drive, Lake Junaluska died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 following a long illness. Rev. Phillips was a native of Atlanta, Ga. He held degrees from Emory, Chandler School of Theology, Yale, Scarritt College and United Theological Seminary. He served as pastor in North Georgia prior to going to the mission field in 1947. He served as a missionary for 35 years in southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan; and five years in the China Program of the Board of Global Ministries, NYC. He spent three years in Korea and Okinawa as a US Army Chaplain. In retirement he was an active volunteer with Yokefellow, REACH, Amnesty Intl, and was a long-time Red Cross Platelet Donor. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Lake Junaluska; their four children, Jim Phillips of St Louis Park, MN; Carol Frizzell of Yountville, CA; Ann Becherer of Stony Brook, NY; and Claire Phillips of Gap, PA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, N.C. 28786 Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
