Reverend Stamey

November 3, 1915 — January 22, 2010

Lake Junaluska, Reverend Dr. Robert H. Stamey, age 94, died on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Fallston, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Franklin and Annie Alexander Stamey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Hubbard Stamey, who died in 2006; a son, Kenneth Robert Stamey; and two brothers, Blanche Alexander Stamey and Ben Franklin Stamey. He received his Bachelor of Divinity from Duke University in 1941 and Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Pfeiffer College in 1971. He served several United Methodist churches from 1941 until 1982. During that time, he served as president of Brevard College where with his guidance and leadership set forth a master plan for the future of the college. He also served as Executive Secretary of the WNC Conference Board of Education and District Superintendent. He is survived by one daughter, Melissa Stamey of Lake Junaluska; four sisters, Margaret Royster of Polkville, NC, Eliza Ross of Kissimmee, FL, Kathryn Nelson of Ooltewah, TN, and Betty Simpson and her husband, Bob, of St. Augustine, FL; one brother, David Gilbert Stamey and his wife, Nancy, of Surf City, NC; and two grandchildren, Lindsey Raeburn and Tyler K. Stamey. A celebration of life will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brevard College, One Brevard College Drive, Brevard, NC 28712 or Waynesville Masonic Lodge No. 259, P.O. Box 74, Waynesville, NC 28786.
