Lake Junaluska, Reverend James Allen Starnes, age 76, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at The Homestead. Reverend Starnes was born on September 24, 1936 in Mooresville, North Carolina, son of the late James J. and Allie Robinson Starnes. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Ralph E. Starnes. Reverend Starnes is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Myrtle Amelia McNeill Starnes; his three children, Katherine Amelia Starnes of Hickory, North Carolina, James Allen Starnes II and his wife, Tiffiney, of Harker Heights, Texas, and William Cannon Starnes of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; two grandchildren, Mason Allen Starnes and Megan Elizabeth Starnes, who were loved dearly by their "Papaw"; and a sister-in-law, Susan Starnes, of Tampa. Reverend Starnes earned two Master's degrees, the first degree in theology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and the second in psychological counseling from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. He also participated for several years in the Duke University Scholars Program. He taught behavioral sciences at Southeastern Community College, Whiteville, North Carolina, served several United Methodist churches in Eastern North Carolina, and also worked as a chaplain in the North Carolina prison system. He retired to Lake Junaluska in 1996 where he spent some of the happiest days of his life enjoying the area's natural beauty, playing golf, and writing and publishing inspirational literature. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Paul Starnes, Reverend Norwood Montgomery and Reverend Charles Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 459, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.
