Lake Junaluska-Reverend John Winters, age 70, of Links Lane, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Memorial Mission Hospital.
He was a native of Tampa, Florida having resided in Haywood County for three years. He was the son of the late Everett Danforth and Genevieve Thompson Winters.
He received his Doctorate from Drew University. He was a minister with the United Methodist Church, Florida Conference for 37 years retiring in 1995. He was very active in the conference, serving on various boards and committees. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 35 years with perfect attendance, and held various offices. He attended Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a gifted musician, loved reading, traveling abroad, enjoyed baking, and cherished his family.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Peggy Pritchard Winters; his father-in-law, J. Samuel Pritchard of Lake Junaluska; his daughter, Jennifer Ruth Richardson and her husband, Ian of Sydney, Australia; his son, Jeffrey Mark Winters and his wife, Cynthia of Thomasville, NC; his brother, Dick Winters and his wife, Ruene of Luray, VA; and four grandchildren, Cameron and Krista Richardson, and John and Abigail Winters.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. The Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. and Reverend Woody Adams will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services, at the church. Private burial services will be held at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
