Asheville, Richard Joseph "Dick" McCarthy, age 80, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. A native of Union, NJ, he was the son of the late Joseph Herbert and Helen Devaney McCarthy and was also preceded in death by his wife, Joan Marie McCarthy, who died in 1999. He was a veteran and sergeant of the US Marine Corp having served during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a plant manager for 7-Up Corporation in Neptune, NJ, circulation manager for the Reporter Newspaper in Toms River, NJ, publisher for the Northeast Times Newspaper in Philadelphia, PA, and was owner/operator of Granny's Chicken Palace. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Bowen of Waynesville; one son, Richard G. McCarthy and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Brick, NJ; four grandchildren, Ryan McCarthy and his wife, Sarah, Shaun McCarthy, and Joseph and Emily Bowen; and one great grandson, Benjamin Mallett. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010 at Green Hill Cemetery with Reverend Leyton Alan Mears officiating. Military rites will be conducted. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
