Richard Shashy

Maggie Valley-Richard "Dick" Shashy died peacefully with his family at his bedside, from complications of a stroke on November 3, 2006. He enjoyed a full and happy life, leaving behind his beloved wife, Gayle, his constant companion of 49 years, and the love of his life. Native of Ocala, Florida, Dick was a prominent local businessman and civic leader for many years. He was a partner in the family business, Moses Auto Parts, founded by his father and uncle. The business flourished in Ocala for over 75 years. He was the third son of Naif and Dawighi Shashy. He is survived by his sister Agnes Shashy, his brother, Abe Shashy and his wife, Frances, and their children, Barbara, Happy, and David; as well as, a large and loving extended family. Dick was devoted to the Ocala Elks Lodge where he rose from Exhaulted Ruler, to Florida State President, to Grand Esteemed Lecturing Knight. While president, he was particularly proud of leading the crippled children charity, which raised over a million dollars for needy children. After many happy years in Ocala, Dick and Gayle relocated to Maggie Valley, N.C., in 2002, where they had a summer home for many years. They immediately became very involved in their community, devoting many hours to St. Margaret's Catholic Church and the Maggie Valley Civic Association. Stranger to no one and friend to all, Dick devoted his entire life to the thing he cherished the most, his family. His faith in God and undying love for his family was by far the thing of which he was most proud; particularly, his three daughters, Leslie, Terry, and Kimberly, and his four grandchildren, Carter, Mackenzie, Grant, and Addison. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, who with his kind and gentle ways brought sunshine, joy, and laughter to his family and anyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed. Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 6, 2006 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Maggie Valley, NC.
