Richard Smith

Canton-Richard Lee Smith, age 39 of the Bethel Community, died Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of Shirley and Leonard Sutton of Canton. He was employed by Wilsonart for 20 years and had attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Danette Ledford of Canton and Sue Ann Owings of Clyde; one brother, Danny Smith of Canton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funerals Homes. The Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Heath Davis will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at his mother's residence, 9 Smokey Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the First Responders of the Lake Logan Volunteer Fire Department for their help and support.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716.
