Candler

Richard Lane Stillwell passed as peacefully as he lived on February 27, 2025. Known for his tender heart and unwavering dedication to helping others, Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Richard was born March 19, 1937, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and then he proudly graduated from Sandhill High School in the Class of 1955. He spent his life inspiring those around him with his dry sense of humor and quick wit, often sharing one-liners that brightened the days of family and friends alike. For over four decades, Richard was a devoted member of Grace Communion International, where his commitment to community service and fellowship endeared him to many.

Richard shared a deep love with his wife of 69 years, Voneta Hunter Stillwell. Together, they raised two children, Kathy S. Odom and Rick Stillwell, instilling in them the values of kindness and compassion. Richard is survived by his wife and children, his sister Annette Stillwell Regan and her husband George, as well as Richard’s brother Johnny Stillwell and his wife Yvonne.

As a proud grandfather, Richard cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren: Bridget Michelle Odom, Melanie Odom Saxon, Rachel Kelsy Stillwell, Jen Mock, and Shannon Hammon. His family expanded further with the arrival of great-grandchildren, Jude and Adia Hammon, who brought him immense joy in his later years, as well as Rick’s fiancé Alice Dean. He was also a loving companion to his two furbabies, Sonny and Sophie.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Stillwell and Martha Hawkins Stillwell, along with his brothers Jimmy Stillwell, Jerry Stillwell, and Gene Stillwell. His legacy of compassion and laughter will continue to inspire those who knew him.
