Clyde, NC – Robert Allen Caldwell, 75, of Clyde, NC passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Born March 31, 1937 in Milan, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Mildred Allen Cunningham and Robert Lee Caldwell, Jr. both from Milan. Robert received his Bachelor of Science degree from Memphis State University in 1961 and his LUTCF from the Life Underwriters Training Council in 1984. Robert had a distinguished forty-year career with the North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance Company in Martin and Haywood counties, NC where he served his beloved company as both agent and agency manager. He was selected as the Most Outstanding Honor Agent for the entire company in 1965 as well as the Most Valuable Agency Manager for the State of North Carolina in 1983. His many company honors of National and International trips earned for sales and service include Hong Kong, Hawaii, Italy and Switzerland. His proudest honor, however, came when he was designated "The Oldest Rat in the Barn" for his forty years of continuous service to his Farm Bureau Insurance clients. His excelled in and enjoyed giving excellent service to his clients, many times at home, and helping new agents to become successful within the company. Robert developed a love for classical music, which he maintained all his life, from his mother, a piano teacher. He was an outstanding photographer, especially enjoying capturing the nature of waterfalls and flowers. He loved boating and served as a safety trainer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48-years, Wanda Smith Caldwell of the home, his daughter, Tamera Edwards and husband Dave of Travelers Rest, SC, a sister, Pollyanne Dwyer and husband, Pat of Jackson, Tennessee, a brother David Caldwell of Jackson, Tennessee, a mother-in-law, Rubena Smith of Greenville, NC, and brothers-in-law, Richard Smith of Greensboro, NC and Douglas Smith of Greenville, NC. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, NC. Private graveside services will follow at a later date in Milan, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Haywood Community College Foundation for Special Projects for the Regional Center for the Advancement of Children, in memorial of Robert Caldwell, 185 Freedlander Drive, Clyde, NC 28721
