Lake Junaluska, Reverend Robert Elmore Brown, age 90, of 244 Atkins Loop, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on January 3, 1921, he was the oldest of six children of the late Edgar Homer Brown, Sr. and Alice Gordon Dickey Brown. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Edgar Homer Brown, Jr. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a Methodist minister. A member of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church since 1950, he served churches in Zolfo Springs, Davenport, St. Cloud, Deland, Jacksonville, Riviera Beach, Orlando, and Punta Gorda. Upon his retirement to Lake Junaluska in 1984, he gave many hours of volunteer service to the community through numerous projects of The Junaluskans, Junaluska Associates, and at Lake Junaluska Golf Course. He began and continued the practice of lighting the rooflines of various Assembly facilities at Christmas time for many years; served as president of The Junaluskans, and also as treasurer of the Junaluska Associates. He also served for several years as Dean of Memorial Chapel at Lake Junaluska and had been a member of the Evangelism Committee at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville. He provided iced drinking water for golfers on the Lake Junaluska Golf Course for more than 15 years. In 1996, he received the Chief Junaluska Award from the Junaluska Associates. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith Hayes Brown; a son, the Reverend Robert Clifford Brown (Becky), of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; a daughter, Carol Jean Brown, of Lake Junaluska; three grandsons, Wesley Rutland-Brown (Natalie), of Davis, California; Robert Rutland-Brown (Grace), of Springfield, Virginia; Randy Rutland-Brown of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; two great-granddaughters, Lucca and Sienna, of Davis, California; one great-grandson, Robert James, of Springfield, Virginia; two brothers, Donald, of LaPine, Oregon; Lloyd, of St. Petersburg, Florida; a sister, Harriet Jones, of San Dimas, California; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating.
