Beloved husband, daddy and "Paw" Robert Harmon Erwin, age 89, of the Bethel community passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Reverend Thomas E. and Maggie Long Erwin. He was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Ernestine Reeves Erwin, who died in September, 2012. He retired from Dayco in 1985 with 43 years of service and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Harmon was recognized as an honorary fireman with the Lake Logan/Cecil Fire Department. He was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran serving in World War II. He enjoyed working in his garden, mowing his lawn, feeding the birds, and driving in the snow. Any outside work was his delight. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peggy Burnette Erwin; two daughters, Sharon Erwin Smart and her husband, Donald, of Waynesville and Vicki Erwin Grooms and her husband, Kenneth, of Canton; a son, Tom Erwin of Candler; a sister, Grace Lane of Franklin; two brothers, Paul and Troy Erwin of Canton; two grandchildren, Hailey Medford and her husband, Isaac, Craig Erwin, and Megan Greene; and a great-granddaughter, Maddie Lee Erwin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Riverside Baptist Church with the Reverend Steve Frazier and Reverend Jesse Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
