Canton-Robert Luther Hines, International Poet, age 76, of 20 Halyburton Street, died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Gulfport, Mississippi and had resided in Haywood County for eight years. He was the son of the late Luther Pierce and Mary Kathryn Noah Hines. He graduated from Tulane University, was a post-graduate student in Florence and Paris, and taught English in Spain. He traveled extensively and spoke many languages fluently. He was involved in real estate, politics, and nearest to his heart was his poetry writing. He published many poems and recently published his last book called "Memoirs of Tennessee Williams." He was best known for his publications "America, America," and "Sons of Russia." He was also a US Merchant Marine having served during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his life long friend, Jack N. Fricks of Canton; god son, Joe Langley of Fairview; and many friends in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, San Francisco, and Paris. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Canton. The Reverend Timothy P. McRee and The Reverend Dr. Russell Smith will officiate. Interment will be at Kosciusko City Cemetery in Mississippi at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 99 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
