Clyde - Robert Earl Jackson, age 60, of Breakwood Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital after a year long battle with leukemia. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of Edwin and Edwina Leatherwood Jackson of Clyde. He was greeted in heaven by his sister, Glenda Mathews. Robert was enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1966 until 1975. Robert served in the 5040th helicopter squadron in Anchorage, Alaska. He was trained as a survival specialist and was accredited for saving 100 lives during his nine years of service. In his civilian life, he loved spending time outdoors working in his yard with his constant companion "Bear". From January 1989 to December 2000, he was a long distance truck driver for Decker Transport. He logged over 1, 000, 000 safe miles. From March 2001 to December 2006, he was employed at Haywood Tractor as service manager. Robert was a member of Clyde First Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 21 years, Helen Bartlett Jackson; one daughter, Ashley Michelle Jackson of Sugargrove, VA; two sons, Johnathan Marcus Allen Jackson of Clyde and Scott Jackson of Candler; one sister, Mary Ann Morgan and her husband, Gary, of Clyde; three brothers, Gary Jackson and his wife, Barbara, of Waynesville, Carl Jackson and his wife, Betty, of Clyde, and Steve Jackson and his wife, Pam, of Waynesville; one grandchild, Holly Jackson; and his constant companion, his dog, "Bear". A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Clyde First Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Leatherwood and Reverend Charles Dean officiating. Memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of the arrangements.
