Canton, NC - Robert Nelson Jakes, age 88, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Mission Hospitals-Memorial Campus. Robert was born in Lafayette, Indiana on March 19, 1928. He was the son of the late Paul L. and Laurah K. Siefers Jakes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen McDonald Jakes; a sister, Betty Mullins, a brother, John Jakes and a step-son, Victor Cole, Jr. Robert attended Purdue University majoring in Agriculture and retired from Western Carolina University in 1990. He was Past Master and 60 year member of Octagon Masonic Lodge 51 in Lafayette, Indiana. Robert grew beautiful dahlias and provided arrangements to the front desk at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. Robert is survived by two daughters, Miriam E. Jakes Fournet of Hilversum, The Netherlands and Colleen G. Vincent and husband, Dale, of West Branch, Iowa; two sons, Paul O. Jakes and wife, Mary, of Frankfort, Indiana and Robin L. Jakes and wife, Sheila, of Linden, Indiana; two step-daughters, Janet C. Leatherwood and husband, Wayne, of Canton and Bridget C. Arnold and husband, Tony, of Cary, NC; 10 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and his dog, "Brownie". A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul Brown and Reverend Carrol Lindsey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716.
